What's the difference between drift diameter and nominal ID?

Nominal ID is calculated from OD and wall thickness — drift diameter is the mill-guaranteed minimum bore per API 5CT, verified by physically passing a gauge mandrel through every joint. Manufacturing tolerances mean the actual bore can be smaller than the nominal ID, so drift (not nominal ID) is the number that determines whether a tool, packer, or wireline gun will actually pass through the pipe. The Area Calculator keeps these as separate fields for exactly this reason.

How do you calculate annular area between casing and tubing?

Annular area is the outer string's internal area minus the inner string's external area — π/4 × (ID_outer² − OD_inner²). The Area Calculator computes this automatically for every adjacent tubular pair in a multi-string configuration, with a live to-scale cross-section diagram alongside the numbers.
